Tub Refinish – Care Instructions for Tub Trim

Tub Refinish, also known as Tub Reglazing, is a process of applying a polyurethane coating to improve or renew the appearance of your fixture. The tub finish is similar to the finish on a vehicle and should be cared for in the same way to prolong the life of the finish.

There are a number of things one must do to make the glaze finish last. If you don’t follow these basic care steps, the life of your finish can be drastically reduced and possibly void any warranty given to you.

Here are the steps you need to take to care for your refurbished tub/enamel tub:

  • Do not use the surface for the number of days or hours specified by the company.
  • Do not place soap, sponges, cloths, bottles, or any other objects on the finish at any time! Instead, use a shower grate.
  • Don’t let leaky faucets go unrepaired!
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners. No SOS pads. No Comet. No razors. NO ABRASIVES AT ALL! The tub will clean easily with spray cleaners and a soft sponge.
  • Do not use bath mats with suction cups underneath. They can pull on the finish and trap moisture.
  • Do not dust the surface with your finger. Surface dust is likely to dissipate in 3-4 weeks with normal cleaning and use. Waxing helps too.
  • Do not use the bathtub or other glass surface to clean brushes or any chemicals or materials related to paint. Keep harsh chemicals out of the tub. Do not clean or store sharp or abrasive items on the surface.
  • Do not allow workers to stand in a glazed tub with their shoes on. Ask them to take off their shoes and put down a soft towel.
  • Do not place or store any items on a tub or finished surface that may damage or cut the surface.
  • Make sure the room is well ventilated and read all precautions and manufacturer’s instructions. ALWAYS use your common sense, be safe and smart.
  • Make sure there are no holes or gaps in the shower grout or caulk. This can lead to wall damage and an expensive repair bill.
  • Use Tilex – Lysol Tile Cleaner – Mr. Clean – Fantastic. NO POWDER, NO ABRASIVES, just a soft sponge.
  • Keep your bathtub clean and wipe it down with a towel after each use. You don’t have to dry it.
  • Keep the caulking around the tub.
  • Wax the enamel tub two weeks after finishing it, then once every 1 to 3 months thereafter. Use regular car wax and DO NOT OVER-POLISH. Start by thoroughly cleaning the surface first, then gently dry. Then apply a light, thin, light coat of wax with a damp cloth using light circular motions. Wipe off excess wax with a dry, soft cotton towel.

With these instructions in mind, you can be sure that you are taking care of your newly refinished tub or tile properly and avoiding the costly mistake of voiding any warranties you may have been given.
