How to clean cream colored curtains

Cream curtains are a stylish addition to any room. They can add a bit of class and elegance to transform a living room into something truly special.

One of the few negative things about having cream-colored curtains is the fact that they mark a little more easily than darker colored curtains. So any dirty handprints or dust marks will show up on your beautiful cream curtains.

Any curtain can be difficult to wash without ruining its shape; So I’ve put together a little cleaning guide to help make washing cream or any light colored curtains a little easier.

Before you begin any curtain cleaning at home, first check the label on the back of your curtains. If they are dry-clean only, it’s best to take them to a professional if you don’t want to risk ruining them.

In general, you will find that if your curtains are lined, they will need to be dry cleaned, as it can be quite a delicate process to clean both the lining and the curtain fabric.

What you will need:

  • Napisan or other mild colorfast fabric bleach
  • Mild laundry detergent – liquid is best
  • Vinegar (if applicable)

To do:

  • Fill the bathtub with water and the indicated amount of Napisan according to the instructions on the bottle and soak the curtains for the indicated time. This will help restore the look of fresh light to any dull cream fabric.
  • Once the curtains have soaked, you can hand wash them with a little fresh water and detergent in the bathroom, or for lighter synthetic fabrics, you can put them in your machine on a gentle hand wash cycle. Be sure not to shake the curtains too much, as this can cause them to break.
  • If you have heavy curtains, it’s best to wash them by hand in the bathtub, as it could damage the washing machine.
  • Once you have washed the curtains, hang them up to dry. You don’t want to put them in the dryer as this can shrink them.
  • Now to iron your curtains check the label on the back to make sure you can use a hot iron, you don’t want to melt any fabric using the wrong iron setting.

If you have metal curtain rings, you can boil them in a pot of vinegar and water to remove any rust stains and make them shiny new again. Make sure you use an old pot!

Your cream curtains should now be nice and fresh and looking like new again!
