Why You Shouldn’t Feed Ducks Or Try To Pet A Wild Duck

Not long ago, I was talking to a neighbor who said she wanted to feed this particular duck. I told him he shouldn’t do it because then all the ducks here would start pooping everywhere. She said that she only went to feed a particular dock, that she also had a mate who also came to say hello and she felt a personal bond between the woman and the duck. You know, sometimes it seems like you can’t get people to understand such simple concepts. You’ll never guess what happened, although you probably can. So let me tell you a story if I may.

In less than a week, hundreds of ducks came to this lady’s yard every day. They would sit and wait for her to come out to feed them. Then, in a frenzy, they would start making a lot of noise, and when she was done, she would have to run inside and hide. Meanwhile, the ducks were pooping all over the neighborhood, there was bird droppings everywhere, and not just little droppings, these birds really know the definition of diarrhea. What a mess, it would take a pressure washer to get all that trash off the sidewalks. She has been caked in there now for over a week.

You see, there is a reason why you shouldn’t feed the ducks, and why there are signs and warnings not to. The least of which has to do with bird flu, ducks are wild and meant to be, they should not be pets. There are reasons why there are signs not to feed the ducks because they make a mess, they make a mess. In nature, those bird droppings go into the soil and help put nitrates back into the soil for plant life. But all that trash doesn’t belong in people’s cars, it doesn’t belong in their backyards, and it certainly doesn’t look as good on the sidewalks out front.

The moral of the story is quite simple; don’t feed the ducks and learn to read english so you know what the signs say. Ducks don’t make very good pets, they like to be wild and like to be with their own kind. In fact, they like to hang out in large flocks, hundreds of them, they feel there is safety in numbers, and that’s the way they do it, if you feed one you have to feed them all, and when you run out food they will not be very happy. And when all that food is digested, well, you know what happens; or do you need to buy one of those stickers for your car? Happens. Please consider all this and think about it.
