Should I buy an English Bulldog?

Buying an English Bulldog is not just buying a puppy. While all puppies require an investment of time and money, the bulldog may require more of both. Many of the traits we love in bulldogs contribute to medical problems. The bulldog’s independent and somewhat stubborn nature will likely make training more difficult. If you only want one dog, then an English Bulldog is not for you.

Rescuing a dog from the pound can cost a couple hundred dollars for spaying or neutering and any necessary vaccinations. There is no doubt that you will love your pup regardless of his ancestry; that he will probably be unknown. In this circumstance you have a dog with only a small investment.

But if your heart is set on an English Bulldog, be prepared for a longer and much more expensive process. It’s important to research breeders to make sure your future bulldog isn’t coming from a puppy mill. After locating a reputable breeder, hopefully relatively close to home, it’s a good idea to take a trip to their location.

A thorough inspection of the breeder’s premises and a look at both female and male bulldogs is essential. It won’t hurt to review the medical records of both dogs that are, or will be, the parents of your bulldog. You’ll want to know how often the females mate; every two years may be better. Of course, checking with other customers who have purchased bulldogs from the breeder is also a very good idea.

Instead of a couple hundred dollars, an English Bulldog is probably going for a couple thousand dollars. Prices for a purebred English Bulldog can range from $1,000 to over $3,000. Of course, the price is simply a down payment. That is true because of the veterinary costs that could be incurred.

Let me tell you the story of my current English Bulldog. He first underwent surgery to remove the eyelashes that grew from his eyes. At the same time, he underwent soft palate surgery to make it easier for him to breathe. All English Bulldogs are subject to respiratory problems due to their physical build.

He later underwent knee surgery and emergency eye surgery for an ulcer. These medical costs ran into the thousands. We paid fifteen hundred dollars for the dog and we have close to five thousand dollars in medical expenses.

Bulldogs often require special diets, which means you can’t buy just any food for them. They also often have skin problems and allergies. Even the healthiest bulldog will require more attention than the average dog. For example, your wrinkles need to be cleaned regularly as they are subject to fungal infections.

An English Bulldog is a good loyal companion with both children and adults. They quickly become members of the family and you will truly love your bulldog. Bulldogs generally do not require a lot of exercise. Playing with them for a few minutes several times a day is enough. The walks are never too long and definitely not when it’s hot. Bulldogs make you and everyone who sees them smile.

If you can give the necessary attention and time, then an English Bulldog is definitely for you. However, if you have doubts about your ability to properly care for one, consider another pet.
