Top 5 Reasons Why Chiffon Is The Best Fabric For Moms

Being a new mom, I always wonder what to wear to be comfortable but still look cute. I don’t want to wear something too ugly and I don’t want something too plain. My son is active, to say the least, so I’m constantly on the go and finding new ways to entertain him. The problem is that I still want to look like I care how I look without going through a ton of effort.

So I have discovered my answer… Chiffon. This fabric is great! It is a lightweight, sheer fabric that comes in 100% silk to 100% polyester. Any of the fiber content will do.

Here are my top 5 reasons why every mom (and grandma!) will love chiffon:

1. Spitting up/spills are barely visible. I remember taking my son to a doctor’s appointment on my lunch break one day. He had just given her a bottle in the waiting room and all the excitement made my little boy vomit a good amount of his lunch… On my shirt he needed to get back to work in. Luckily, I was wearing a chiffon blouse inspired by watercolors that I bought at Express. You couldn’t even tell that he had spat on me. After my son got his shots and I played the role of the evil bondage, I cleaned up the mess. I used a wipe from his diaper bag and drenched the area. He prevented smudges and was dry in a minute!

2. Transparency = Freshness. Since Chiffon is so sheer and lightweight, he doesn’t have to worry about sweating like a pig while he plays with the baby. This is one of the biggest advantages for me. My son loves to play rough. To amuse him, I jump around, make faces, pretend he’s Super Baby (he LOVES this game), and do other cool things to make a fool of himself in public, all for the sake of entertaining him. Actually, it’s like working out with it at my 20-pound weight, but I can’t run around in a sweatshirt all my life. So this is my solution.

3. Fluid silhouettes. There’s nothing worse than wearing something you can’t move in. “I love that top, but how do you breathe?” Have you ever heard that? Yeah, I’m not a fan. I need to be able to do a fifty yard dash in my clothes. With chiffon, I’ve noticed that most silhouettes are baggy and loose. The fabric itself has barely any stretch, but it’s still sheer enough to show off your amazing post-pregnancy body and acts as a filter in case you want to hide problem areas.

4. It’s IN! I haven’t seen a season where chiffon has been completely omitted from every designer’s line. For spring, designers seem to always pair with lace for a whimsical and romantic feel. For fall, deeper and jewel tones always seem to be in style. So never fear! Buy yourself a basic empire top with ruching at the waist and dress with the accessories of the season! Or for those of you like me who don’t make the huge bracelets and crazy big earrings that appeal to baby fingers, just do it yourself.

5. Cheap to Expensive. This fabric comes in a variety of fiber content combinations. Can’t afford the $95 100% silk chiffon? Opt for the $30 polyester version. You can probably even find something for $5 on a discount rack. (In truth, polyester can sometimes be stronger than silk!) You’ll get the benefits of fabric no matter the fiber content. The differences are minimal. For example, polyester is synthetic, it is man-made. And nothing can be silkier than Silk, I’m afraid. The man tried his best, but mother nature has prevailed. Also, when it gets close to a lighter, polyester melts like plastic. But like I said, very minimal differences.

So, I could sing the praises of my favorite chiffon top to you every day of my life, but seeing is believing! Go to your local department store, or if a fussy baby like me is loving teething, save yourself the trouble and shop online!
