How can two houses be combined into a new one?

When you move in together, many items you already have in your home will be duplicated. I want to offer you some tips and talk about how to integrate the belongings of two people and how to move everything from two properties to one.

Planning is crucial if you don’t want this job to be extremely stressful. Sit down and think about what your new property looks like, what you want in it, and what possessions you already have. Make a decision about what you want to take with you and what you want to throw away, after all, there is no way that everything will fit in one place. Be efficient, don’t throw away your furniture and start over, try to save a few bucks and use what you already have without making it look bad. If your sofa doesn’t look brilliant with your partner’s table, just don’t put them together.

Each of you should have an equal say in how the property should be designed, so don’t be self-centered. I mean, you might despise your partner’s favorite chair or pillows; but that’s no excuse to throw away everything you really want to save. Although you have become accustomed to living alone in a house and having only what you want in your house, now you must also take into account the preferences and needs of your partner. When there are two of you living in the same space, neither of you will get everything exactly how you want it, after all, you are two different people.

Time is of the essence! I know it’s hard to get rid of your stuff, but it’s smart to do it before you move. It will be much simpler that way: you won’t have to pack them up, take them to the new place, unpack them, and give them away once you’re inside. At the end of the day, planning this ahead will save you time and can actually save you money, since you don’t have to pay to move your belongings. As much as we would all like to keep everything, it is not feasible.

As a Toronto real estate agent, I have a proposition for you. Grab a pen and a piece of paper and write down all the furniture and decorations on each of your properties. You will see items that are duplicates; take note of them and look at the appearance and age of these items. Sometimes just looking at the items makes the decision for you, but write next to the item if it is to be kept or disposed of. Then think about what you can do with unwanted assets in your new home: leaving them collecting dust in the garage may not be the best solution, maybe you could sell them and scrape together some extra cash.

I think that combining two individual houses, different furniture and decorations is extremely difficult. Discussion is really the most critical thing here, talk it over calmly and I’m sure you won’t have big problems that you can’t solve.
