Healthier Lebanese Sweets Are One Option

Lebanese sweets don’t have to be unhealthy. With little modification, many of them can be very healthy and nutritious. Its caloric content can also be reduced. All this is possible for many types but not for all. Some are naturally high in sugar and reducing their content would greatly affect their taste.

Desserts and sweets are consumed every day and especially on joyous occasions. However, most people predetermine that these are high-calorie, unhealthy items and their consumption should be minimized as much as possible. This is largely due to the fact that they contain a lot of sugar. Lebanese sweets contain a lot, but their amount can be modified to make them healthier. This would obviously affect flavor and reduce sweetness, but if done correctly, its impact on flavor can be minimized while its impact on health characteristics can be maximized. Also, sweeteners can be used instead of sugar to reduce the amount of calories they contain.

In Lebanese sweets, most of the sugar comes in the form of syrup. These cakes do not contain much raw sugar. Some of it is added to the filling, but most of it comes from the syrup that is prepared separately and then added to them before or after baking, depending on the type of dough being considered.

Borma, for example, is known to have a lot of syrup. This particular confection can be made much healthier by letting more of the syrup drain off after baking. In fact, once baked, Borma is left for hours to drain the large amounts of syrup that are added to it. The longer the draining process is given, the less sugar it will contain at the end and the healthier it will be and the fewer calories it will contain.

Looking at any recipe for these desserts and calculating the number of calories in them, you will find that, on average, they contain about fifty calories each. This obviously depends on the type of part and its size, but it is a round number that can be used as an approximation. Many people are fine with this amount of calories and like to limit their intake to one or two pieces. Those who can take more calories can afford to choose even more pieces. But for those who like fewer calories per piece, they can reduce the amount of sugar or use a sweetener instead. Sweeteners can play a big role here, as they can greatly reduce the number of calories in them.

This would be a first choice if you consider sweeteners to be healthy in the first place. Some people believe that sweeteners have adverse effects and prefer regular sugar. However, if that’s not the case for you, it’s important to note that Lebanese sweets made with sweeteners don’t stay fresh as long as regular ones. Sweeteners do not help preserve cakes as much as regular sugar does, and therefore this can affect freshness if cakes are kept for more than two weeks.

Apart from that, increasing the amount of nuts positively affects the health value of these sweets. Nuts are considered nutritious food items and are necessary in many diets. So it’s worth making sure your cakes are nut-dense rather than syrup-dense. The latter provides calories without any nutritional value, while the former offers both at the same time and is considered to be of superior value.
