Edge protection works like a fence + a barrier, with a solid bottom section that stops debris from falling onto people beneath (like a fence) and can withstand one tonne of lateral impact (like a barrier). It is suitable for use on all working surfaces including sloped roofs, and is available as either a freestanding guardrail or fixed to the structure of the building.

The European Norm EN13374 requires that temporary guardrails must have at least two horizontal rails with a minimum height of 1100 mm. It also states that they must be able to withstand loading criteria set out in Euro Code 1 EN 1991-1-1 & the UK National Annex to that standard. The regulations state that collective passive measures are preferable to personal protective equipment for protecting workers who are working at height.

TG1:22 focuses on roofs and open floor levels, and provides 15 generic design drawings that can be used to provide compliant temporary edge protection for flat or sloping roofs with an angle of up to 10°.
