Child Safety on Halloween: What Colors Are Safe to Wear?

As we all know, Halloween is full of outdoor activities. Little kids go door to door yelling “Trick-Or-Treat.” In gated communities, this is a safer practice, as lighted sidewalks and streets are quite common. However, if you live in a more country setting, sidewalks are rare and streetlights are few and far between.

So, if you decide to take your child trick-or-treating this Halloween, where sidewalks don’t exist and streetlights are only found on street corners, be sure to dress them in colors appropriate for the evening hours.

White: This is the safest color for a night out. When headlights hit the brilliant white of a T-shirt or pair of shorts, drivers will have no doubt that someone is walking along the road. All-white costumes are best: a ghost, a bride in a wedding dress, or a ballerina in a white tutu are just a few ideas.

Yellow – Bright yellows are similar to white in that they show up well when caught in headlights. Muted yellows are not as effective. There are some costumes that are predominantly yellow: a Sol costume, Sponge Bob Squarepants, Belle, and a Bumblebee with thin black stripes are examples.

Light Blues, Pinks, and Oranges: Once you get away from white, any of the “baby” colors, like light blue, are fine for the evening hours. Many costumes fall into these color categories: Disney princesses Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty have dresses in these colors, and Blue’s Clues blue is a light shade of blue.

However, everyone knows that there will be Halloween nights when our children will not choose their costume based on its color. Batman in his black suit and cape, black cats and witches, and even Superman in his dark blue and red will all be hard to see once the skies start to darken. When he’s a year old like this, be sure to use reflective tape on various areas of your child’s costume, as well as his trick-or-treat bag. This will keep them safe and it will have fun!
