Can you find a purebred dog at the local shelter?

Many people don’t know that they can find a purebred dog at their local animal shelter, humane society, or kennel. This is a great way to get one of the “designer” breeds like a Labradoodle or Lhasa-poo for a fraction of the cost. Plus you’ll feel great because you’ve saved an animal’s life.

For some reason, it’s not common knowledge that you can walk into the shelter and find a purebred. Many people just think that the only dogs they’ll find there are mutts. I have no idea why this is the case. Breed rescues pull dogs out of shelters every day across the country, and many are left behind because they don’t have room for them.

So if you want to get something like a Golden Retriever, Labrador, Boston Terrier, or any other type of dog, and don’t want to pay high breeder fees, give the shelter a try. You can search online and find out what those near you have available. Give Petfinder a try, but don’t give up if you don’t see the breed you want near you. Shelters are often too busy to list their dogs online. In this case, you need to visit in person and observe the dogs.

Even if you try to call, they will usually tell you to go inside and look around. I recommend this route over buying from a backyard breeder. It’s cheaper too.
