What is a puzzle?

Often the definition is: “A puzzle is a problem or riddle that defies ingenuity.” In a basic type of puzzle, you logically put objects together to find some shape, image, or solution.

Puzzle games never seem to get old, especially nowadays with the computer, WWW and online games. Most of the puzzle games have basic graphics, but they are very addictive and sometimes leave you playing for hours.

There are many types of puzzles. Some of them are very popular and some are not. The puzzles that have been created so far can be divided into several main categories.

puzzle are a well-known and popular type of puzzle. A jigsaw puzzle is a puzzle that requires the assembly of numerous small pieces, with each piece having a small part of a picture. When all the pieces are complete, a puzzle produces a complete picture. There are two dimensions, three dimensions (Puzz-3D is the trade name for three-dimensional puzzles), and online puzzles have recently appeared.

word puzzle as crosswords and anagrams are the most popular type. A crossword puzzle is a word puzzle that takes the form of a square or rectangular grid of black and white squares. The objective is to fill the white squares with letters, forming words by solving some type of question or clues that lead to the answers. Black squares are used to separate words or phrases. An anagram is a type of pun, and by rearranging the letters of a word or phrase, a new word or phrase is produced using all the original letters once.

logic puzzle include many different types of puzzles. Logic puzzles are based on mathematics, like the well-known and popular Sudoku. Besides Sudoku, other logic-based number placement puzzles include Nonograms (or Pixel Puzzles), Kakuro, Impossible Puzzle, and The Tower of Hanoi.

combination puzzle are a variety of mechanical puzzles consisting of a series of pieces that can be manipulated into different combinations by a group of operations. The most famous of these puzzles are the original Rubik’s Cube and the Tangram puzzle, where the goal is to form a specific shape out of all seven pieces.

mosaic puzzle are puzzles involving two-dimensional packing problems where several flat shapes must be assembled into a larger shape without overlapping. In some mosaic puzzles, you must first dissect a certain shape and then rearrange the pieces into another shape, or dissect a certain shape while certain conditions are met. Mosaic puzzle types include Conway Puzzle, Domino Mosaic, and Puzz-3D.

building puzzles they are solved by putting together any puzzle from a given set of pieces in a certain way. This main category includes any of the stick puzzles, many tile puzzles, and also some mechanical puzzles. In online games, representative puzzles of this type are Bridge Builder, The Incredible Machine, and Pipe Dream.

transportation puzzle they are puzzles in which the player pushes boxes and tries to achieve the goal of the game. The most popular representative for this type of puzzle is the Sokoban puzzle. Other examples of this type of puzzle are cube puzzles and sliding puzzles.

picture puzzle are popular with children and include Connect-the-Dots and Spot the Difference where two versions of a picture are shown side by side, and you must find the difference.

sliding puzzles they are solved by sliding blocks without lifting any of the pieces on the board. Most people are familiar with the N puzzle (or fifteen puzzle), in which flat pieces are slid across a board to establish a certain final configuration.

tower puzzle are puzzles where players take a journey around some kind of game board. The most popular tourist puzzles are Knight’s Tour, Mazes (or labyrinths), Mizmazes and Logic mazes.

mechanical puzzles they include Rubik’s cube, disassembly puzzles, interlocking puzzles, and impossible objects (such as Ship in a Bottle).
