How to write a poem just for fun

Have you ever tried to have fun rhyming words? Poems are fun for all ages! This is good for exercising the brain. When my children were younger, we tried to speak in short sentences with complete rhymes. The words and sentences seemed funny or out of context, but everyone was never bored because the mind was working and the thinking cells were at full throttle!

My students liked writing diamond poems and completing the blank exercises, but what they liked the most was writing number poems. See this example.

Their phone number is 525-4944. You can use your phone or cell number to specify the number of syllables, accents, or words on each line.

The android

How are you today?

I’m fine.

May God light your way.

Are you busy?

I’m working now. And you?

Bored and sleepy

How creepy!

The poem is configured as a triplet and a quatrain, where lines four, six and seven mark the pattern of the rhyme. The poem can also be a syllabic poem, where the phone numbers establish the number of syllables. Try this poetic experiment.

Also, you can try changing the verbs in your poems. Change the tense of the present verb to a past tense or a past tense to a present form, although the poem may sound confusing because the poems are formed or intended to be with a general tone and structure, not as rigid tenses dictate. See this example.

Glass (my original poem)

He broke the glass.

She and her evil teeth broke it.

His gums did not bleed as he swallowed the fries.

The monster in it, with its slimy green saliva, reveled in my precious glass.

But after a while, he burped his black heart.

Glass (changing the verb tense from past to present)

She breaks the glass.

She and her evil teeth break it.

His gums do not bleed while he swallows the fries.

The monster in it, with its slimy green saliva, delights in my precious glass.

But after a while, he burps his black heart.

Also, you can write occasional poetry. These poems include celebration, mourning, fortuitous events, and birthdays, among others, expressing various emotions related to people, events, and objects. Watch this.

A prayer poem for calamities

Lord, we can do nothing but wait for what happens to us.

We are but dust, but you make us your children.

Our hands cannot extend, they only measure from one arm.

Our feet cannot run, only walk a few steps to the next turn.

We can’t hide God, just stay where we are. When the earth trembles, the waters rise and darkness visits our lands, we can only cry out for your mercy and seek your face.

Where are you dear God?

Please protect us and those we love. Hold each falling leaf and sweep away each rattle of doom with your breath. God come! Come God to us, and bring the weak earth, every crippled nation, and mend those broken teeth from the mouth of life.

We are so afraid, dear God.

Forgive our transgressions.

Help us to rest with you, forever!

Stop the chaos and give us peace of mind!

Be our strength!

Most Sacred Heart, we trust in You.

All angels and saints, hear our prayers.

In your hands, Almighty God, we entrust our lives.
