Garden Equipment – Frequently Asked Questions

Much depends here on the type of equipment you are talking about.

For starters, anyone who is powered by electrical power should be thoroughly checked by someone qualified before plugging in and attempting to use it.

Obviously, the same is true for anything that is powered by an internal combustion engine. If you buy something that is, to put it bluntly, in trouble, then you can spend a lot of time regretting it and writing some hefty checks to try and fix things.

For hand tools, as long as they are priced right and in good condition, you shouldn’t have a problem.

For something more complicated, buying second hand can be a good way to save money, but it may be wise to buy only from an experienced and registered agricultural and garden equipment dealer.

Is it true that zero turn mowers can tip over easily?

Not!

As long as you buy a quality model from a major recognized manufacturer, you shouldn’t have a problem.

However, and this is important, if you really have set out to do silly things with motorized garden equipment, you can ultimately turn almost anything upside down.

So stay within the guidelines outlined in the manufacturer’s manual and you shouldn’t have a problem.

How safe is it to use chainsaws?

Chainsaws are extremely powerful and potentially very dangerous pieces of equipment.

Now just to be clear, they are only dangerous if you use them incorrectly or have not followed the tips on how to learn to use them to get started.

Depending on the size of the saw in question, you may also need a certain degree of physical strength in some situations to be able to use them safely. They are heavy and after a while, if you are not used to them, they can put pressure on your arms and shoulders. That is a good sign to stop.

Never forever Allow youth to use a chainsaw unsupervised, or preferably not at all. Never forever wear one while perched precariously at the top of a ladder.

You must also, under absolutely all circumstances, use the range of approved safety equipment. That would include helmet, ear protection, face protection, heavy duty armored gloves, and armored boots as well.

You may have seen people who wear them without any of those things and only wear t-shirts and shorts. Don’t follow their example!

Is an electric chainsaw better than a gasoline version?

This is a great question that regularly causes a lot of discussion!

Generally speaking, electric chainsaws have the advantage of being a bit lighter, quieter, and also a bit less temperamental. That’s something you’ll understand if you’ve ever tried furiously and unsuccessfully to start a recalcitrant gasoline-powered version!

However, they have a limited range because they need access to electrical outlets and are often less powerful than their combustion engine cousins. Using it in tight spaces can also be a problem due to the fact that you are trailing a cable behind you.

It’s also not uncommon for people to cut their own power line when they get in trouble (make sure you always have emergency breakers on line).

It’s kind of a generalization, but many professionals who do regular heavy-duty cuts will, for various reasons, choose a gasoline version. Electric chainsaws tend to be more popular in suburban settings where the load placed on the saw is likely to be less frequent and lighter overall.
